An offer has made for the acquisition of the 200 room Forum Hotel in Portmore, St. Catherine.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding has confirmed that the offer is from a group led by a Jamaican residing in the United States who is proposing to convert the building into a medical facility and nursing school.
According to Mr. Golding, the group has been asked to prove that it has the financial backing to complete the purchase before formal negotiations begin.
"They've actually made an offer ... a substantial offer, and we've asked for verification of the financing available before we can refer the matter to the privatization committee for consideration," said Mr. Golding, who was speaking Tuesday night at the Government's second town hall meeting in Portmore, St. Catherine.
The Forum Hotel, which sits on 15 acres of land, was constructed in the 1970's but later ceased operations and was taken over by the Urban Development Corporation in 1982.
Previous attempts to sell the property failed due to the lack of feasible offers.
